Retired Army General Sekamana Eyes FERWAFA Top Seat

Retired Brig. Gen. Sekamana Jean Damascene and Rurangirwa Louis have expressed interest in the presidency of Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA).Brig. Gen. Sekamana who retired recently from Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) submitted his nomination papers at 14:55 on Friday, February 23, 2018.

Accompanied by Miroplast Fc Secretary General Nshimiyimana Alexis Redamptus, retired Brig. Gen. Sekamana was received by the Electoral Commission officials led by its president Kalisa Adolphe and vice president Nsabimana Boniface in presence of other members of the commission.

After submitting his candidature, retired Brig. Gen. Sekamana told the press, “I have submitted my nomination papers with intent to be elected the president of Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA),”

“It’s true I retired recently from Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) but when duty calls at any time, you avail yourself to serve your country. I will make known my plans once my candidature for the presidency of Ferwafa has been approved,” added the 60-years old who joined Rwanda Patriotic Army current RDF during the liberation struggle in 1990.

The former Rwanda Athletics Federation president Rurangirwa Louis was the second and last to submit his bid at 16:54, beating the deadline by six minutes.

Rurangirwa said, “I have submitted my papers, they have told me to fix a few issues regarding some documentations of the proposed committee members. I hope to have done by Friday next week. I am confident enough this time round, I have support and I am looking forward to the task after my candidature has been approved,”

Rurangirwa Louis was the second candidate to submit his interest in the FERWAFA’s presidency

According to the FERWAFA Electoral Commission president Adolphe Kalisa, nomination papers of the two candidates were received and will undergo scrutiny between February 28, 2018 to March 9 when the commission will declare the candidates eligible to vie for the FERWAFA’s top seat.

Qualified candidates will begin campaigning officially on March 12, 2018 until March 30, eve of the election day.

The term of office for the Executive Committee which will be elected on March 31, 2018 and the newly elected president will have a four-year term renewable three times only.

Nzamwita Vincent has been president of Rwanda Football Federation since January 2014.

The roadmap to the 2018 FERWAFA presidential elections is as follows;

February 19-23, 2018: Submission of Nomination forms

February 28, 2018: Scrutinizing candidates’ nomination files

March 08, 2018: Receiving petitions and hearing appeals  (if any)

March 09, 2018: Declaration of Candidates

March 12-30, 2018: Official campaigning period of declared candidates

March 31, 2018, 14:00: Elections & Announcing theFERWAFA Executive Committee

April 3, 2018: Submission of election report
