Police Investigating the Death of a Genocide Survivor in Gasabo

The Police are investigating the death of a Genocide Survivor who was found on lying lifeless on the roadside on April, 6th in Rutunga Sector, Gasabo District.

According to reports from Rutunga, Prudencienne Mukampfizi 58, was discovered on the evening of April 6th, a day before Kwibuka24 commemoration week commencement, when Rwanda remembers more than one million victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

It is said that Mukamfizi was allegedly coming from the Rutunga coffee collection centre to sell her coffee.

On her way back home, “she passed by the nearby pub to buy local beer for her husband,” according to Janvier Rudakubana, Head of Ibuka, the umbrella of Genocide survivors’ association in Rutunga Sector.

She was found dead on the by the road with a one liter container of banana beer with no sign of injury.

“We urge the Police to carry thorough investigations because evidence suggests she might have been killed,” Rudakubana said.

According to Police, it is too early to confirm whether the case is related to the Genocide ideology or not since investigations are ongoing.

“We don’t want to link this case to Genocide ideology before we finish our investigations,” Commissioner of Police (CP) Théos Badege, the Spokesperson of Rwanda Police, told KT Press.
