Rwanda’s Rayon Sports Fc suffered their first loss in the CAF Confederation Cup after going down 2-1 to Algeria’s USM Alger in a Group D match staged at Stade de Kigali in Kigali City on Wednesday afternoon.

Rayon were looking for their first win in the group after opening their campaign with two draws and were hoping for a win at home.

The hosts started the encounter with guns blazing in search of an early goal, but they were not clinical upfront in the opening 20 minutes.

Following a number of attempts, it was Ismailla Diarra who found the back of the net with seven minutes to the interval to put the hosts ahead.

As they were looking to bag their second goal, Rayon allowed Alger to find their way back into the clash with Farouk Chafai’s goal before half time.

Although Brazilian Coach Roberto Oliveira Goncalves de Calmo looked to push for an early goal in the second half, the North Africans were disciplined at the back.

Alger’s efforts were rewarded in the dying minutes of the clash when substitute Abdelraouf netted in injury time to ensure they bagged a win.

Oliveira’s men now sit at number three in the group with two points from three matches.

The loss has seen Rwanda drop to third spot with two points while USM tops the group. Kenyan side mauled Tanzania’s Young Africans 4-0 to secure number two in the group with five points behind USM Alger.

Rayon Sports will be looking for revenge in two weeks’ time when they clash once more in the Confed Cup in Algiers on Sunday, July 29.
