Tour du Rwanda: Hellmann Wins Stage Three, Mugisha Retains Yellow Jersey

Hellmann Julian of Team Embrace the World won the rigorous third stage of the 10th edition of Tour du Rwanda which covered 199.7km from Huye District to Musanze District on Tuesday.

Stage three of Tour du Rwanda saw 76 riders riding from Huye District, passed through Muhanga, Ngororero to Mukamira and Byangabo before climaxing in Musanze district.

Julian emerge the victor as he used a total time of 05h11’04 to win the 199.7km  route in which six riders could not manage to finish the stage.

Despite winning the stage, Julian could not reclaim the yellow jersey which was kept by Team Rwanda rider Mugisha Samuel who finished a distant 13th, coming one minute and 13 seconds behind the winner.

Mugisha was in control of the race with 10km to go alongside Mugisha Moise but Julian staged a strong fight to passby the leading peloton, sprinting fast onto the finish line to launch stage victory.

Mugisha who won the second stage from Kigali City to Huye maintains the lead on the general standings with a total time of 10h34’00 followed by another Rwandan Uwizeye Jean Claude who rides for POC Cote de Lumiere, coming 21 seconds behind Mugisha.

The king of the mountain accolade after the third stage was claimed by Ethiopian Hailemichal Mulu who amassed a total 31 points on the general classification of the best climber. He is followed by Hellman Julian and Rugg Thimothy, both of Team Embrace the World with 18 and 15 points respectively.

Top of the sprint classification standings after the third stage is Rwandan Hadi Janvier who rides for Benediction with 8 points. He is joint top alongside Amis Sportif rider Ukiniwabo Rene Jean Paul while Team Rwanda rider Mugisha Samuel is ranked third with six points.

The best young cyclist after three stages is Rwanda’s Mugisha followed by Ethiopian Hailemichael Mulu and Doring Jonas of Team Descartes Romandie.

Rwanda’s Mugisha maintains lead as the best African rider followed by fellow countrymate Uwizeye Jean Claude while Hailemichale Mulu is ranked third, both are 21 seconds behind Mugisha.

In the team classification, Team Rwanda dropped to third spot with a total time of 31h57’26, coming behind POC Cote de Lumière who are leading with a total time of 31h47’44 while Team Ethiopia are second with a total time of 31h48’13.

On Wednesday, riders will take part in stage 4 which will begin in Musanze district in Northern Province to Karongi down south covering 135.8 kilometres long.
