Bright Start for Rwandan Quartet in Africa Zone V Club Champs

Gisagara men’s volleyball club celebrate their victory over Burundi’s Amicale on the opening day of the Africa Zone V Volleyball championship which started on Wednesday at Amahoro Indoor stadium

Rwandan representatives UTB, Gisagara, REG and Kirehe men’s volleyball clubs ensured a bright start in the inaugural Africa Zone Five volleyball club championships which kicked off in Kigali on Wednesday.

The Africa Zone Five volleyball club championships have a participation of 12 teams from five countries.

Burundi, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda are attending the championship running until February 24 at Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium.

On the opening day which had six matches from morning until night, Rwanda’s UTB beat Ethiopia’s Wolaita 3-1 registering 25-17, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-13 before Kirehe volleyball club also registered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) win over Wolaita in Group C. UTB and Kirehe have three points each in Group C.

In Group A, Rwanda’s Energy Group’s volleyball team edged Uganda’s KAVC 3-0 winning all the three sets in 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 to secure three points.

In Group B, Gisagara volleyball club defeated Burundian side Amicale 3-0 winning all the three sets 25-18, 25-15, 25-22 while Uganda’s Nemo Stars snatched a 3-2 win over the Burundian outfit Amicale with a 24-26, 25-17, 25-17, 19-25 and 15-12 set victories.

In Group D, Rwandan side APR Volleyball club lost their opening group stage against Uganda’s Sports S 2-3 (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25 and 13-15).

Action continues on Thursday with six matches which will climax at 22h00. In Group A, Ugandan side KAVC takes on Tanzanian side Jeshi Stars at 10h00 before the Tanzanian side faces REG at 14h00.

In Group B, Gisagara volleyball team will face Uganda’s Nemo Stars in the last game of the day at 20h00 which will decide the table leader.

In Group C, fans will be given a toast of the Rwandan flair as Kirehe takes on UTB in a tough challenge which will also decide the group leader at 18h00.

In Group D, Ethiopia’s Wadda Walabu hosts Uganda’s Sports S in bid to secure their first points at 12h00 before they face APR volleyball team in their second group match at 16h00.

Most of the teams are taking part in the championship as part of their preparations ahead of the main Africa Club Championships, which will be held in Cairo in April. The winner will represent Africa to compete in the World Club Championships.
