Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame is in Maputo – Mozambique to witness the signing ceremony of the final Peace and Reconciliation agreement between the Government of Mozambique and Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) – the main opposition party.
Kagame’s presence at the signing of the agreement, which seals a peace deal between government and the opposition party, was confirmed by the State Minister for East African Community Affairs, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, who is accompanying the President.
“Today I am in Maputo, Mozambique to accompany H.E. President Paul Kagame for a historical event for this country: the signing of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement between the Government of Mozambique and the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO),” Minister Nduhungirehe tweeted today.
According to the media reports from Mozambique, today’s agreement will be signed at Praça da Paz, in Maputo.
This is the third agreement between a Mozambican Frelimo government and Renamo, preceded as it is by the 1992 Rome General Peace Agreement and the 2014 military hostilities cessation agreement following a new wave of confrontation between the two parties.
Last Thursday, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and the leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) Ossufo Momade signed an agreement to end hostilities in Gorongosa, central Sofala province, to formally end clashes between government forces and the armed wing of the main opposition party.
The agreement signed pledges peaceful national elections to be held on October this year. Previous elections have been marred by violence and RENAMO allegations that the ruling party FRELIMO rigged results.
In July last year, Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi paid a two-day State Visit to Rwanda, where, together with his host President Paul Kagame, witnessed the signing of five agreements that will help business flow and exchange of knowledge between both countries.
The agreements include bilateral cooperation agreement which in near future will include, opening embassies in respective countries.
In June this year, Rwanda officially opened its Embassy in Mozambique. President Kagame last visited Mozambique in 2016.
