Students will not join their families and relatives this festive season to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, the Ministry of Education has said.

The Ministry has students and their educators to remain at school and focus on studies as they prepare second term exams.

“Parents, teachers, and students, the ministry of education is delighted for the partnership in the reopening of the academic year for 2020/2021. We are requesting further collaboration in these unusual times where students will not join their families to celebrate the festive season, as it has been done previously,” Gaspard Twagirayezu, state minister of primary and secondary schools said in a short video clip posted on Twitter.

“Students and teachers are requested to focus on their studies and score good results. Students at school should study hard while also preventing the spread of COVID-19,” the Minister further said.

“In cases of students who have not yet reopened, parents are requested to support their children to follow online and media broadcast programs.Teachers, we have the uneasy duty of teaching students and making sure that they pass exams despite the uneasy times of the pandemic,” Twagirayezu said.

Twagirayezu said that teachers should be exemplary to students in preventing the Covid-19 and defeating the pandemic, together with the rest of Rwandans.

According to the Ministry of Education, the academic year calendar for 2020/2021 started with the second term  on Novermber 2, 2020 and will conclude on  April 2021.

After reopening, students were given four weeks for revision, assessment, and counteractive learning activities in classes out of a total of 18 weeks for the second term.

The second term is longer because the first term was suspended due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic that led to the closure of schools on March 16, 2020.

Kigali has already entered New Year festivities; streets have been decorated with different colors that prepare for Christmas on 25th and the New Year.

However, celebration will not allow families to get together following COVID-19 restrictions that forbid social gatherings among others.
