Rwanda has expressed sympathy with the people of Israel following the death of Shimon Peres-the country’s ex-president and Noble Peace Prize winner.

Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo tweeted; “Sympathy and solidarity with Israel, the family and many friends of Shimon Peres; a great statesman has passed on!”

Israeli ex-president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shimon Peres died on Wednesday after battling a major stroke for weeks.

The 93-year-old died in his sleep at around 3:00 am (0000 GMT), Rafi Walden, who is also Peres’s son-in-law, told AFP.

Shimon Peres, regarded as a strong statesman by the people of Israel, occupied many top positions in his country. He held the post of Prime Minister two times before becoming the president from 2007 to 2014.

In 1994 Shimon Peres won Nobel Peace Prize along with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and then Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for his role in negotiating the Oslo accords, which envisioned an independent Palestinian state.

President Kagame last met with President Shimon Peres in July 2013, during his 5-day state visit to Israel.
