As has always been the custom in the month of December, President Paul Kagame and The First Lady have today hosted children from across the country.

President Paul Kagame and Mrs Jeannette Kagame wished over 200 children a merry Christmas and a happy New year in a party hosted for them at Village Urugwiro gardens.

“The reason we are here is to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New year. We wish you a healthy life as growing children who will be the future leaders,” he told them.

“For the country to have good leadership, those leaders come from you the young children with good manners,” he added as the children applauded.

Kagame also told the children to dream big because their dreams are still valid.

“You can become politicians, pilots, doctors and everything you want to be. You can also use your different talents to spread important messages,” he advised them.

“Let me take this opportunity to wish you a merry Xmas and happy New year as your parent and leader. Send my greetings back to your homes,” he told them adding that his family values this annual event.

President Kagame told the children that they should enjoy the holiday season but be well behaved as they prepare to grow and take part of the country’s development.

After the speech, Kagame and the First lady cut a cake with the children and gave them various Christmas gifts.

The children were  accompanied by their parents and several officials including members of unity club, an organization of spouses of country leaders that had fun with the children.

Uwase Claudine 11, from Rutsiro district told KT Press that she is happy and  will deliver the president’s greeting to every child in her village.

“I am happy. It is my first time to come to kigali and I managed to meet the president. I’m encouraged. I will be a primary six candidate next year and with what the president told us my dream is to be a doctor,” she added.

Besides the gifts they were given by the First family, these children also had time to play with them and also share lunch.

This Christmas party is an annual event organised by the First lady to celebrate the festive season with children aged between 7 -12.
