Armed Gang Terrorizing Rusizi Residents Arrested

Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has paraded 12 people suspected of belonging to an armed gang that was terrorising residents in Rusizi district, in the south western part of the country.

The investigative body said the dozen individuals who include one woman are being held at Kamembe RIB Station, in Rusizi district.

“RIB Kamembe station arrest 12 people on various charges, including possession of firearms and smuggling of weapons into the country, armed robbery, setting up an illegal armed group and suspected murder,”

“Some of the suspects had been expelled from the military for misconduct and had completed their sentences in prison for other crimes they had been convicted of,” RIB said.

RIB said the suspected crimes were committed at various times in Nkombo, Gihundwe and Kamembe Sectors in Rusizi district where they were arrested in collaboration with the security services and the public.

The Spokesperson of RIB, Dr. Thierry B. Murangira told KT Press that the 12 will face five charges which include illegal possession of firearms and smuggling on weapons into the country, creating of an illegal armed group and impersonating security, among others.

“The 12 include Murenzi Boniface, a former soldier who was discharged from the army over misconduct, Dusenge Jean de Dieu, a former member of local defence, Ngendahimana Jean Damascene and Ngerageze Justine, the only female in the group. She is a daughter of Biyoga Lambert, who is also among the group being investigated,”

“Others are Dusabe Emmanuel, Nsabimana Valens, Habiyaremye Jean Pierre, Mugabonisenge Theogene, Nzaramba Theobard, Kubwimana Viateur, Murenzi Vital and Tuyishime Emmanuel. Investigations showed that there were two other people involved but they had already been arrested. These are Bavugamenshi Fidele, who is detained at the Mulindi Military detention and Biyoga Lambert earlier mentioned,” Dr. Murangira said.

They were arrested with firearms and military fatigues.

The perpetrators were always dressed in military uniforms and carried firearms while purporting to be members of the military.

RIB condoled with families which lost their loved ones and were affected by the activities of the gang.

The investigative body sent a reminder that activities that are aimed at destabilizing the security of the country and Rwandans in general will not be tolerated, thanking members of the public for sharing information that led to the arrest of the members of the criminal gang.
