National basketball side, REG is seeking to win the regional Genocide Memorial Tournament which gets underway in Kigali from May 25-27, 2018.
REG, winners of the local edition of the 2018 Genocide Memorial Tournament, are placed in Group A alongside Espoir and Terreur basketball club respectively.
Group B is comprised of APR, Goma Bulls and Patriots.
Action in both Group A and Group B starts on Friday night as APR BBC takes on Goma Bulls at Amahoro indoor stadium from 6pm before REG BBC take on Terreur BBC later at 8pm.
Last Sunday, former league champions REG defeated APR 84-45 to win the local Genocide Memorial Tournament.
REG skipper Ali Kubwimana believes his side is in the right shape to win this year’s edition following a trophy-less disappointing season.
Speaking to local media this week, Kubwimana said, “We had a disappointing season, losing the league title in a very frustrating manner. However, each title is worth fighting for and now we have our focus on the regional GMT edition, with the aim to reclaim it.”
He added, “The GMT regional edition will be a good opportunity to test ourselves ahead of this year’s Africa Zone V Club Championships, since it attracts best basketball clubs across the region. Retaining the trophy would be incredible morale.”
REG won last year’s regional GMT tournament after overcoming domestic rivals Espoir 81-69 in the final, just a week after the latter had overcome them 61-59 to win the local edition.
Veteran clubs will also be in action where Patriots veterans BBC are scheduled to face VCGB at the NPC Gymnasium at 18:00 before Espoir BBC take on UGB veterans later at 8pm.
