Rwanda Defeats Uganda to Retain IHF Junior Challenge Trophy

Rwanda U20 Handball Team retained the IHF Zonal Tournament title which climaxed on Sunday in Kampala, Uganda

Defending champions Rwanda junior handball team maintained their good form exhibited from the first day to retain the IHF Junior Challenge Trophy tournament which climaxed on Sunday in Kampala, Uganda.

Rwanda met Uganda in the final, their second encounter in the tournament. In a tricky and decisive encounter, Rwanda who were unbeaten enroute to the final, once again proved their worth as they defeated the Ugandans 32-27 to win the title.

Rwanda dominated the game with good play which saw them win the first 20-11 before going on to play a more improved game in the second half which ended in a total 32-27.

 The rivals had met in the first game of the tournament early last week with Rwanda securing a slim 30-29 victory.

The Rwandan side reached the final unbeaten after edging Uganda, Sudan, Burundi and Somalia in Group A to seal a semi-final slot. They defeated Kenya 31-20 to book a spot in the finals.

The Rwandan squad which faced Uganda in the final included Hakizimana Jean Claude, Nshimiyimana Alexis, Karenzi Yannkick, Kayijamahe Yves, Igirimpuhwe Gad, Tuyishime Zachary and Nsengiyumva Dieudonne

In the battle for the third-place playoff, Ethiopia defeated Kenya 29-22.

Rwanda will now represent the Zone 5 at the continental championship which also doubles as the world cup qualifiers due in Morocco in November, 2018.
