FIBA U18 Women Champs: Rwanda Falls to Mozambique

Rwanda women junior side suffered their maiden defeat at the on-going FIBA U18 Women’s African Championship losing 46-53 against hosts Mozambique on Sunday night in Maputo.

Rwanda started on a poor note losing the first quarter 1-13 but recovered to win the second quarter 18-4 and the third quarter 18-10. However, they could not hold the hosts in the last quarter which they lost 26-9.

Rwanda’s Bella Murekatete was the country’s best performer as she notched 14 points in a game that was well won by the Mozambicans through their captain Ester Gomes.

Earlier in the day, Egypt had an easy run against Cape Verde. The Junior Pharaohs managed to seal a 56-31 victory.

Even though the islanders lost their second game in a row, Joseana Vaz emerged as the highest points’ scorer with yet another 18 points to her stat sheet.

After two matches, Rwanda is placed second in Group A with three points, one behind leaders Mozambique while Egypt and Cape Verde are ranked third and fourth with three and two points respectively.

Group A will be in action on Tuesday with Rwanda facing Cape Verde at 15:45 before Mozambique hosts Egypt at 18h00, all matches will be staged at Pavilhao do Maxaquene in Maputo.
