Cricket Builds Hope T20 tournament gets underway on Sunday

Eight cricket teams will take part in the Cricket Builds Hope Tournament which gets underway on Sunday at Gahanga and Kicukiro Cricket Oval.

The tournament is part of the activations that lead up to the grand opening of the multi-billion Gahanga Cricket Stadium in Rwanda which is set to become the best in Africa. It will officially be launched October by President Paul Kagame.

The 8 team tournament which runs from Sunday to October 9th includes the East African nations of Kenya, Uganda and hosts Rwanda which will compete with 5 invitational teams from the UK.

Group A is composed of Rwanda Select XI, UK’s Coutts XI, Eton Ramblers and Kenya’s U-19 teams.

Group B is comprised of Christopher Shale XI, Grannies XI, Yorkshire Tea XI and Uganda U-23 men’s team.

Rwanda Cricket Development Manager Davis Turinawe said on Saturday, “Everything is well planned and underway to host the Cricket Builds Hope T20 tournament,”

“We have eight teams confirmed for the tournament. We also expect to have cricket legends match involving Brian Lara, Michael Vaughan, Sam Billings among others for the week-long event,” added Turinawe.

In the opening matches on Sunday, Rwanda Select XI faces Coutts XI at 9am before Eton Ramblers XI takes on Kenya U-19 at 13:00 in Group A at Gahanga cricket oval.

In Group B’s opening matches due at Kicukiro Oval, Christopher Shale XI will face Grannies XI at 9am before Yorkshire Tea XI takes on Uganda U23 men at 1pm.

The group round matches will climax on October 25 with winners proceeding to the semi-final and plate semi-finals on Thursday, October 26 and eventual winners will clash in the plate and main finals due on October 29, 2017.

The tournament is a lead up to the official opening of the Gahanga Cricket Stadium on October 28th October with a celebrity cricket game between a Brian Lara Select XI and a Michael Vaughan XI.
