AFCON U-17 Qualifiers: Rwanda loses to Ethiopia; face Tanzania in bronze medal battle

Rwanda-U17 Team will take on Tanzania in the third place classification match after losing to Ethiopia in Fridays semi final round.

Rwanda’s Junior Wasps lost 4-2 on penalties to Ethiopia in the semi-final round on Friday to set up a bronze medal battle against hosts Tanzania on Sunday in the of the Cecafa region qualifiers of the 2019 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Rwanda scored crucial goals through Rodrigue Isingizwe and Moise Nyarugabo while Ethiopia equalized courtesy of a double from Mintesnot Edrias Wakjira.

With regular time ending in a 2-all draw, both sides went into spot kicks to determine the eventual winner. Ethiopia won 4-2 as Rwanda’s Moise Nyarugabo and Jean Claude Issa Hagumubuzima failed to convert their penalties.

Both Rwanda and Tanzania will be facing each other for the second time. During group stage, Rwanda lost to Tanzania 0-4 in the Group A match played on Tuesday this week.

On the other side, Tanzania failed to cruise into the final as they lost to a strong Ugandan Cubs’ side which registered a crucial 3-1 win.

Uganda took the lead through Idd Abdulwahid’s fifth minute strike. The joy was short lived with the equalizer coming on 12 minutes from Edison Mshirakandi as the two sides rested for the half time break tied one goal apiece.

John Kokas Alou restored Uganda’s lead with 13 minutes left on the clock before Amiri Njiru’s own goal in the second minute of added time put the game to bed.

In the earlier first semi-final, horn of Africa nation Ethiopia eliminated Rwanda 4-2 in a tense post match penalty shoot-out after normal time had ended two all.

Uganda, who had won their last group B game in convincing fashion 8-0 against Djibouti, will now face Ethiopia in the final this Sunday at the national stadium.

This will be the second time in the tournament that the two countries will face off. The champion will join the 2019 hosts Tanzania at the AFCON U-17 championship.
