Heroes Cup 2019: UTB Sweeps Volleyball Titles

UTB men’s volleyball being crowned champions of the 2019 Heroes Cup Tournament over the weekend

The University of Tourism, Technology and Business Studies (UTB) dominated the 2019 Volleyball Heroes Cup Tournament as they won all titles in men and women categories respectively.

In the final matches staged at Amahoro indoor stadium on Sunday, UTB men’s side beat Gisagara volleyball club 3-1 (25-17, 26-24, 17-25, 25-19).

In the women’s category, UTB women’s volleyball club edged Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) 3-1 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-13).

In Serie B results, Don Bosco Gatenga defeated Christ Roi 3-2 (25-21, 5-37, 17-25, 25-17, 15-12) respectively.

With the support of Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour (CHENO), sporting federations are holding various competitions in bid to support honour and remember numerous officially designated national heroes who lost their lives in the cause of their country.

Besides volleyball, basketball and football are among other federations who had preliminary competitions being played over the weekend and are expected to climax on February 1, National Heroes Day.

Rwanda has classified its national heroes into three categories; Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi.

Imanzi comes first and features people who demonstrated utmost achievements at the expense of everything else, including own lives. They include Maj. Gen Fred Rwigema, who died on the frontline a day after the launch of the Liberation War and the ‘Unknown Soldier’ who represents all soldiers who who lost their life fighting for Rwanda.

The second category, Imena, is for heroes remembered for their extraordinary acts for the country marked by sacrifice, high importance and example.

They include King Mutara III Rudahigwa Charles Léon Pierre, Michel Rwagasana, Agathe Uwilingiyimana (former prime minister), Félicité Niyitegeka, a Catholic nun who was working at a parish in Rubavu and Nyange Secondary School students.

The last category Ingenzi is comprised of heroes who second IMENA and who are notorious for their good ideas or outstanding achievements characterized by supreme sacrifice, great importance and high example.
